TileQuantCoverage math for tile, thinset and grout — before you buy.

About TileQuant

TileQuant is an independent site that works out tile, grout, thin-set and backsplash quantities from the tile size rather than from a rule of thumb.

It exists because tile is bought by area but grout is bought by joint length, and the two scale completely differently — the same floor in mosaic takes roughly ten times the grout of the same floor in large format.

Where the numbers come from

  • TCNA trowel selection guidance and ANSI A108.5 mortar coverage requirements
  • manufacturer coverage figures for sanded and unsanded grout
  • published spread rates by notch size for standard square-notch trowels

Every page states the source and the assumptions behind its figures, because a number without its assumptions is not much use. Where a coverage rate is taken from a bag label rather than measured, the page says so.

Joint length, not floor area

Grout follows total joint length, not floor area — so the same room in 2-inch mosaic takes roughly ten times the grout of the same room in 24-inch tile. Any figure quoted as pounds per square foot without asking the tile size is a guess.

What this site does not do

We do not give installation instructions for waterproofing assemblies. Shower pans and wet areas follow the membrane manufacturer's printed method, and deviating from it voids the warranty that matters when something leaks.

Who runs it

One person, tiling occasionally and maintaining this the rest of the time. No editorial team. What should earn your trust is that every coverage figure names the tile size, the trowel notch and the bag it was read from.

The quantities run as code across every room, tile size and joint width on the site, so an error in one constant becomes visible across hundreds of pages. When something is wrong it gets corrected and the correction is noted.

How it is paid for

TileQuant is free to read and funded by display advertising. No sponsored placements and no affiliate links; no adhesive or grout brand has any say in what appears here.
