Every bag of grout carries a coverage figure, and it is not marketing. It is a real calculation — for one specific combination of tile size, joint width and tile thickness. Change any of those three and the figure changes, sometimes by a factor of four.

What the figure assumes
A coverage statement always names its assumptions, usually in small type beside the number. Something like: 150 sq ft at 12″ × 12″ × 5/16″ with a 1/8″ joint.
All four of those matter:
- Tile size — the biggest lever. Halve the tile dimensions and you double the grout per square foot.
- Joint width — linear. Double the width, double the grout.
- Tile thickness — linear. This is the joint depth, and it is the one people forget.
- The product itself — sanded, unsanded and epoxy grouts of the same weight have different densities and therefore different volumes.
A coverage figure without its assumptions is unusable. If the bag only gives a number, find the technical data sheet; manufacturers such as Custom Building Products and Laticrete publish per-product coverage tables that state all four.
Converting it to your job
Rather than trusting a single headline number, scale it:
your coverage = stated coverage × (your tile factor ÷ stated tile factor) ÷ (your joint ÷ stated joint) ÷ (your thickness ÷ stated thickness)
where the tile factor is (L × W) ÷ (L + W) — the reciprocal of the volume term, so bigger tiles give more coverage.
Worked example. A bag states 150 sq ft at 12 × 12, 1/8″ joint, 5/16″ thick. Your job is 3 × 6 subway, 1/16″ joint, 5/16″ thick.
- Tile factor, stated: (12 × 12) ÷ (12 + 12) = 6.00
- Tile factor, yours: (3 × 6) ÷ (3 + 6) = 2.00
- Tile ratio: 2.00 ÷ 6.00 = 0.333 — subway needs three times the grout
- Joint ratio: 0.0625 ÷ 0.125 = 0.5 — your joints are half as wide
- Thickness ratio: 1.0 — same
- Your coverage: 150 × 0.333 ÷ 0.5 = 100 sq ft
The narrower joint gives back half of what the small tile took away. That interaction is why single-number rules of thumb fail so badly here.
The range on one bag
Same 25 lb bag, four common jobs, using a stated 150 sq ft at 12 × 12 / 1/8″ / 5/16″ as the reference:

From 50 to 250 square feet on the same bag. That is the whole reason to do the conversion rather than trusting the headline.
Why you will still use more than the calculation
Grout has a high waste fraction compared with most materials, because so much of it never reaches a joint:
- What stays in the bucket after the last float-load.
- What the float carries and drops.
- What the sponge removes during clean-up — on small-format tile this is a surprisingly large share, because there is far more tile surface per unit of joint to wipe.
- What goes off before you get to it, if you mixed more than you could place in the working time.
Add 10 % on large format, 15 % on small format and mosaic. And round up to whole bags, because you cannot buy two thirds of one.
Buy it all at once
Cement grout colour varies between manufacturing lots. Coming back for a second bag a week later gives you a joint that does not match, and on a floor that is permanent under raking light.
Buy the whole quantity in one purchase and add one spare bag. Keep the spare sealed. It is the cheapest repair material you will ever have, and it is the only one guaranteed to match.

- Water ratio. Mixing wetter than the bag states increases yield and reduces strength and colour consistency. It is not a way to make a bag go further.
- Epoxy grout coverage is stated per unit differently and the working time changes everything about how much you can mix at once.
- Thinset is a separate calculation entirely.
The number on the bag is right. It is just right about somebody else's tile until you scale it.
